An Interesting Discovery…
In September of 1883, a sister and brother discovered Marengo Cave while playing near the bottom of a sinkhole. Orris and Blanche Hiestands may have been chasing a rabbit or they may have just been curious, but they quickly realized they had discovered a mighty cavern.
Three days later, the children told the owner of the land, Mr. Samuel Stewart, about their discovery. They thought they had discovered diamonds, but Mr. Stewart quickly found out it was a cave. He began to give guided tours, costing a quarter per person, and a new landmark was created!
